Unit 6 Passive Voice

PASSIVE VOICE  is a really useful structure in English. Here you have some examples of notices found in different public places.
  • No 1 is a photo of the walls of Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The holes of the bullets can still be seen. They have not been repaired. The text says:
"The damage to these walls is the result of the enemy bombing during the blitz of the Second World War 1939-45, and is left as a memorial to the enduring values of this great museum in a time of conflict."
  • No 2 is the notice on the foot of London Monument.  The text says:

"This monument designed by Sir Christopher Wren was built to commemorate the Great Fire of London 1666 which burned for three days consuming more than 13,000 houses and devastating 436 acres of the city. ... The balcony is reached by spiral stairway of 311 steps and affords panoramic views of the metropolis... the allegorical sculpture on the pedestal above was executed by Caius Gabriel Cibber."
  • No 3 is a notice carved in wood which can be read on a bridge in Eton
"This bridge was designed and built by Jamie McCullough"

  • No 4 .- Notices like this can be found in parks in London. The text says:
"In the interest of hygiene the public are requested not to feed the birds"

·         No 5.- I found this notice in the yard outside the church of St Bartholomew the Great in London. The text says:
"It is forbidden to drink alcohol in this churchyard by order of the rector and churchwardens."

Another example found in Churchill Gardens by a photographer of flickr, George Rex.
