The zipper

The invention I’ve chosen is the zipper. It might seem to be a stupid invention, but it’s an essential one.

The zipper, as we know it today, was invented by Gideon Sundback in 1913, but
the first idea about this fast way of fasten clothes was from Whitecomb L. Judson.

The zipper consists of two sets of metal teeth that are complementary. The zipper closure is necessary to unite or separate the teeth. It consists of three wedges. The teeth are made to be opened or closed only one after the other.

The first zipper was used to close belts to keep money and in the tobacco bags. But when they really became famous was when they started to be used as a way to close jackets and other kind of clothes, as boots.

Before the zipper, there were other ways to fasten clothes such as the button, the laces, the needles, the pins

Some years later, the Velcro appeared, but the zip has remained as the method to fasten clothes for excellence.
